The larger format (especially 13" rolls) and print longevity are the two primary factors that drove me to upgrade from my previous Canon Dye printer. I only wish there was an extra space to hold both the Matte and Photo Black cartridges at the same time. Not that handling is all that different. In fact, things tend to almost be more intuitive on the new body. In any cases, I'll be posting some new images I have captured during these local learning excursions. One very surprising improvement is the performance during long exposures. The D200 performs very well in terms of faster noise reduction and excellent thermal noise performance. The "Moon Clouds" image was captured during drastic cloud colour changes while exploring these limits. After long ignoring the single strapped camera bags, I have found this to be one of the most useful ways of carrying my camera. Even though nothing compares to the weight support of a good backpack, accessibility for street/casual shooting left much to be desired. The Slingshot packs solve this problem in a light and incredibly well designed product. It has enough space to carry around my most used lenses (even the 70-200 VR off camera if need be), D200 with grip, filters, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Overall design is fantastic down to the built-in rain cover, and tuck away support strap. Nikon has released the D200. This post is just about my general excitement for this camera. Whether I will be purchasing the new model is another question. Afterall, the D70 is still a great camera in terms of quality. The obvious statement of 'skill being more important than gear' is something that is very true, but there are a handful of features in the D200 that I would find incredibly useful for certain styles of photography I have grown to enjoy.

The key features that seem most exciting to me are (based solely on specs):
- larger/brighter viewfinder
- FP flash sync
- built-in flash acts as master
- ergonomics! (fantastic access to everything I often change)
- Multi-CAM 1000 (hopefully a great improvement in speed)
- faster burst shooting
- more useful display (larger, %400 zoom, RGB histograms)
- available accessories (grip, wireless, and remote primarily)

There are many other great features, but these are the most exciting for me. Higher megapixel count is something that doesn't concern me greatly, but is of course always useful and part of the obvious progress. My print size desires will surely grow as time passes. However, the one element I am waiting for is reports on (or a chance to try) the Multi-CAM 1000 focus system. I expect it to be faster than the D70, but how close to the D2X this comes is yet to be seen. If all is well, the danger of the availability of the D200 may result in a lightening of my wallet at which point I will likely sell the excellent D70.

Landscape category

A bit of re-organising has happened in that I have added a Landscape category. A great place to see such animals in the most natural way possible without extensive involvement in a more formal excursion. The animals are left to live natural lives and exhibit their natural societal behavior with minimal human intervention beyond feeding. And even that is kept to natural levels of exposure.

In addition to the Wolf photographs (temporarily in the 'nature' gallery), there are also a few other images posted while on my trip into Northern Ontario.

Airshow

I went to the Toronto International Airshow (first time in quite a few years) to shoot a bunch of photos and to enjoy the demonstrations of aviation. Only a few of the photos have been posted in the 'Other' gallery. I have added the Quicktime VR Gallery that uses Apples Quicktime extension to display interactive panoramas. I have also added the High Resolution image gallery that uses the Zoomify Flash player to allow viewing of high resolution images while efficiently minimizing the required bandwidth. Both galleries currently only have test images, but will be updated as soon as possible. There are a few projects I have shot that will make use of both galleries but simply need to be processed and assembled for display here. Needless to say you will have to have Quicktime and Flash installed to make use of these. The galleries can be found under the photo gallery heading. I have just re-discovered Rapidweaver and purchased a copy to give it a good test. So far, It seems to be a really efficient way of updating content on a page like this. In any case, many of the things on this site are temporary until I get some of my more complete images processed and uploaded. The page will probably change a good amount until everything settles in. I hope anyone that comes across the visual expressions that I use as a creative variance from what I do with the other hours of my days.
